Name lookup

Gender, origin and etymology

Look up what a first or last name means, where it comes from, and how it is used. Answers come from open reference data, not from any breach record.

Enter a name above. Both parts are looked up separately, so a full name returns what is known about the given name and about the family name.

Where these answers come from

Three independent sources, each cited beside the claim it produced. Any of them can be missing for a given name, and what is missing is simply not shown rather than guessed at.

  • Name lists Open name lists covering five languages, bundled and queried offline. Reading a name in every list at once is what surfaces the cases where languages disagree.
  • Wikidata The curated entity for the name itself: how it is classed, the language it comes from, its native spelling and its related forms.
  • Wikipedia The lead paragraph of the name article, taken from the reader own language edition where one exists.
